The publishing journey

What actually happens after you send us your child’s idea.

Nine clear stages, roughly ten to twelve weeks, and a parent checkpoint at every one. Here is the whole path from first conversation to published author.

  1. Step 1Week 1

    Parent discovery call

Your child shares the idea in their own words.

We meet you and your child, understand their age, stage, confidence and the idea they are excited about. You leave the call knowing the realistic scope, timeline and cost.

  2. Step 2Week 1–2

    Idea and storyline shaping

The idea becomes a proper story plan.

An editor helps your child turn a spark into a structure: characters, chapters or spreads, beginning, middle and ending — always keeping their voice, never replacing it.

  3. Step 3Week 2–5

    Writing with guided support

    Your child writes; we coach.

Age-appropriate writing prompts, weekly check-ins and gentle deadlines. Parents get progress updates so you always know where the manuscript stands.

  4. Step 4Week 5–7

    Editing and proofreading

The manuscript is polished, not rewritten.

Structural feedback first, then line editing and proofreading. Every change is explained so your child learns why it makes the writing stronger.

  5. Step 5Week 6–9

    Illustration and art direction

The book starts to look like a real book.

Cover concepts and interior artwork built around your child's descriptions and sketches. You approve the visual direction before final artwork begins.

  6. Step 6Week 9–10

    Layout and print-ready design

Typesetting, cover finish and final proof.

Interior layout, title page, dedication, author bio and back cover. You receive a digital proof to read with your child before anything is printed.

  7. Step 7Week 10–12

    ISBN, printing and listings

    The book becomes officially published.

ISBN allocation, publishing setup, printing of author copies and listing on the distribution channels included in your package.

  8. Step 8Launch

    Launch and sharing plan

Your child steps forward as an author.

A simple launch plan: announcement copy, author photo guidance, school or community sharing ideas, and how to speak about the book with confidence.

  9. Step 9Ongoing

    Young author community

The book is the beginning, not the end.

Your child joins the wider Pen Down Press world of authors, with planned webinars and Q&A sessions where young authors can learn from business owners and leaders.

What we promise parents along the way.

You approve at every gate

Storyline, edits, artwork and the final proof — nothing moves ahead without a parent sign-off.

The voice stays your child's

We coach and polish. We never ghostwrite a child's book and present it as theirs.

No surprise costs

Your quote is confirmed after the discovery call, with the scope written down before work begins.
